UDF's Strong Lead in Kerala Elections

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) appears set to reclaim power in Kerala, potentially ending the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) decade-long rule. According to exit poll predictions, the opposition coalition is showing a significant lead. Concerns are rising regarding the LDF's standing under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) may struggle to make a notable impact despite aggressive campaigning. The Matrix poll suggests the UDF could secure between 70 to 75 seats, with the LDF projected to win 60 to 65 seats and the NDA expected to gain 3 to 5 seats. People's Pulse estimates 75 to 85 seats for the UDF, 55 to 65 for the LDF, and 0 to 3 for the NDA. Axis My India forecasts a comfortable victory for the UDF with 78 to 90 seats, while the LDF is anticipated to receive 49 to 62 seats and the NDA 0 to 3 seats. The results will be announced on May 4.

Election Context and Implications

Kerala's assembly consists of 140 seats, with voting taking place in a single phase on April 9. A total of 71 seats are required for a majority. If the exit poll predictions hold true on May 4, it would mark another significant setback for the ruling LDF in Kerala. For Congress, this would signal a crucial comeback after a decade, potentially influencing their performance in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The election campaign focused heavily on governance, welfare schemes, unemployment, allegations of corruption, and anti-incumbency sentiments. The UDF campaigned on promises of administrative reform and economic revival, while the LDF highlighted the distribution of welfare schemes and infrastructure development under Vijayan's leadership. The BJP aimed to strengthen its foothold in urban and coastal areas through aggressive campaigning.

Looking Ahead to Future Elections

All eyes are on the 2026 assembly elections, which will follow the historic results of 2021 when the LDF broke the long-standing tradition of changing governments every five years in Kerala. In that election, the LDF won 99 seats with approximately 45.3% of the vote share, while the UDF managed only 41 seats with around 39.4%. Despite receiving over 12% of the vote, the NDA did not secure any seats.
