Kerala CM Promises Justice for Victim of Mob Violence in Palakkad
Commitment to Justice
On Monday, Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan assured that justice would be served for the family of Ramanarayan, a native of Chhattisgarh who lost his life in a mob attack in Valayar, Palakkad district.
Describing the incident as deeply concerning, the Chief Minister emphasized that such acts tarnish the reputation of a progressive society like Kerala and are entirely unacceptable. In a statement from the Chief Minister's office, Vijayan confirmed that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the crime, with a special investigation team led by the district police chief assigned to look into the matter.
Thorough Investigation and Compensation
Instructions have been issued for a comprehensive investigation into all aspects of the case, along with the initiation of necessary legal actions. Vijayan stated that the government would review the case and ensure appropriate compensation for the victim's family.
Opposition's Demands for Accountability
The Chief Minister's remarks came a day after the opposition party, Congress, and the victim's family called for compensation and a thorough investigation under stringent laws, including the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Ramanarayan's brother mentioned to reporters on Sunday that the family would not accept the body until their demand for a compensation of 2.5 million rupees and other requests were met.
Details of the Incident
Ramanarayan, aged 31, was allegedly beaten to death on Wednesday evening over accusations of theft near Kizhakettappallam in Valayar. The leader of the opposition in the state assembly, V D Satheesan, had previously written to the Chief Minister urging immediate financial assistance for Ramanarayan's family.
So far, five individuals have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Ramanarayan.
