Self-Lockdown Advisory in Kerala

On Friday, Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called on residents to adhere to a 'self-lockdown' from 11 AM to 3 PM due to a heatwave warning issued by the India Meteorological Department. He urged the public to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day and to limit outdoor activities to only essential tasks. Drawing a parallel to the COVID-19 pandemic, Vijayan emphasized the importance of taking this situation seriously for personal safety.

This recommendation comes as the weather department has warned of heat conditions in several districts of Kerala, including Palakkad, Kollam, and Thrissur, where temperatures have soared above 40 degrees Celsius. The high humidity levels have exacerbated the heat issues in various regions. Officials noted that the combination of elevated temperatures and humidity has made conditions particularly uncomfortable, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. The state government has advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and exercise caution.

Previously, the weather department had issued warnings for heat waves in certain areas of Kerala on April 23 and 24, while also forecasting hot and humid weather for parts of Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and coastal Karnataka in the coming days. The department recommended the consumption of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and traditional drinks like lassi and buttermilk to prevent dehydration. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, have been urged to take extra precautions.

Additionally, the weather department has predicted scattered rainfall in parts of Kerala and nearby areas. Between April 23 and 27, light to moderate rainfall is expected, accompanied by thunderstorms and winds reaching speeds of 30-50 km/h. Similar weather conditions are anticipated in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam until April 25, with warnings for thunderstorms issued for parts of Rayalaseema and Telangana on April 23 and 24. Early forecasts have also indicated a risk of lightning in some areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
