Kentucky Governor Reveals Miscommunication About Senator McConnell's Health
Governor Beshear Addresses Health Rumors Surrounding Senator McConnell
Andy Beshear, the Governor of Kentucky, disclosed that he received erroneous calls from two separate agencies claiming that Republican Senator Mitch McConnell had passed away while hospitalized. In an interview with journalist Katie Couric, which was shared on YouTube on Thursday, the Democratic governor mentioned these calls but did not specify the agencies or the timing of the communications. "I received two calls from different agencies, not state-related, suggesting he had died," Beshear stated.
This revelation comes amid ongoing concerns regarding McConnell's health following an extended hospital stay. On July 12, the senator's office issued a comprehensive statement indicating that he was undergoing treatment after a fall in June. They also shared a photo of the 84-year-old senator in a hospital bed with his wife, Elaine Chao, who previously served as the US Transportation Secretary.
Prior to this update, McConnell's office had not clarified the reasons for his prolonged hospitalization, leading to rampant speculation. Emergency dispatch audio from June 14, the day he was admitted, suggested he was found unconscious and might have experienced a heart attack. However, McConnell later confirmed that doctors had dismissed several serious health concerns. "My doctors have assured me that I didn't break any bones or suffer a concussion," he stated. "I did not have a heart attack or stroke, nor do I have any tumors or hemorrhages." His physician also noted that the senator developed pneumonia early in his hospital stay but responded well to antibiotic treatment.
Before the senator's office provided details about his health, Beshear had publicly urged McConnell to share more information. In a social media post, he referenced his previous calls for transparency regarding the health of the former president, suggesting that McConnell should similarly update the public about his condition. "I am calling on Sen. McConnell to end the wild speculation and simply inform us about his health status," he emphasized. On July 8, Beshear sent a letter requesting a complete update on McConnell's health for the people of Kentucky. Although McConnell has expressed his intention to return to the Senate, his office has not yet indicated when that might occur.
