Kennedy Center Removes Trump’s Name Following Court Ruling
Kennedy Center Reverts to Original Branding
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has started to eliminate any mentions of former President Donald Trump from its branding and official documents. This action follows a federal judge's decision that deemed the addition of Trump's name to the institution unlawful. As of Monday, the center's website has reverted to simply 'The Kennedy Center,' removing the previous designation of 'The Trump Kennedy Center.' This change is in line with a court-imposed deadline of June 12 for the removal of Trump's name from all institutional communications, including email signatures and letterheads.
The controversy originated from a decision made by the center's board on December 18 to rebrand the institution, which included adding Trump's name to the building's exterior signage the following day, a move executed without congressional consent. In a ruling on May 29, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper declared that the inclusion of Trump's name was illegal and also halted a broader plan related to renovations of the cultural landmark.
Following the ruling, officials at the Kennedy Center confirmed their compliance with the court's order while considering additional legal avenues. A spokesperson emphasized the institution's commitment to 'preserving this revitalization and recognizing leadership contributions,' even as it reverts to its original branding.
This dispute is part of a larger political and legal struggle concerning the rebranding of significant landmarks in Washington, D.C., during Trump's second term. The administration has proposed various redevelopment projects across the capital, including near the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and other historic sites. The Kennedy Center has also faced uncertainty regarding planned renovations, as the court blocked efforts that would have temporarily closed the venue for major construction.
Trump has publicly criticized the ruling and the presiding judge, alleging political bias and warning that the performing arts center may encounter further disruptions as legal battles continue. For now, the institution has reverted to its original identity as 'The Kennedy Center,' marking a setback in attempts to permanently associate Trump's name with this prominent cultural venue.
