Kejriwal's Inquiry into CJP Protest Arrests
Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and former Chief Minister of Delhi, reached out to New Delhi's Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sachin Sharma on Tuesday. In his letter, he requested details regarding the FIRs filed and the individuals detained following the CJP protest at Jantar Mantar on Monday. Additionally, Kejriwal visited the Parliament Street police station to gather more information. In his correspondence with DCP Sharma, he urged for the immediate release of names of those against whom FIRs have been lodged and who were taken into custody after the protest. Kejriwal expressed concern over reports indicating that multiple FIRs were filed against individuals demanding accountability from Prime Minister Modi regarding failures in the education system.
He further noted that several individuals were reportedly detained without any FIRs being filed after the protest. The AAP leader emphasized the need for both lists mentioned to be made public promptly to ensure those affected can receive appropriate legal assistance. This request comes a day after the protest at Jantar Mantar, where incidents of stone-pelting and unlawful assembly allegedly occurred, leading to the detention of numerous demonstrators. The Delhi police have registered five FIRs in connection with these events and are currently investigating the matter. They are looking into whether the violence was part of a premeditated conspiracy.
According to police sources, FIRs have been filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) 2023, the Arms Act of 1959, and the Public Property Damage Prevention (PDPP) Act at the Parliament Street and Connaught Place police stations.
Sources revealed that the Delhi police are analyzing over 250 videos, including mobile phone clips, CCTV footage, drone recordings, and police body camera footage, to identify those involved in the alleged violence. On Monday, the police released footage of the stone-pelting incident in the Connaught Place area, stating that rioters had vandalized police vehicles and thrown stones at a police team near Regal Cinema in the Outer Circle of Connaught Place. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities are also probing whether WhatsApp or Telegram groups were created to gather people before the violence erupted in New Delhi.
