Guwahati, Oct 29: The 2026-27 tourism season at Kaziranga National Park, which commenced on October 3, has already attracted approximately 22,000 visitors in its first 26 days. In response to the increasing number of tourists, the forest department is contemplating the opening of the Burhapahar Range.
According to Divisional Forest Officer Arun Vignesh, the park has welcomed around 400 international tourists among the total visitors. The influx of tourists surged during the Durga Puja festival, surpassing last year's figures.
With the growing interest in the park, officials are considering allowing access to the Burhapahar Range, in addition to the currently accessible Kohora, Bagori, and Agoratoli ranges.
Vignesh stated, "Given the rising tourist numbers, we are planning to open the Burhapahar Range soon." He also announced that elephant safaris will recommence on November 1, adhering to the park's traditional schedule.
"We initiate the elephant safari every year on November 1, and this year will be no exception," he confirmed.
Kaziranga officially reopened for the 2026-27 tourism season on October 3, with the presence of Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah and Agriculture Minister Atul Borah during the inauguration.
During the opening, Mallabaruah noted the consistent rise in tourist numbers at this UNESCO World Heritage Site and expressed optimism about setting new records this season.
"The number of visitors to Kaziranga has been on an upward trend each year. We anticipate that the park will continue to break its own records this time as well," he remarked.
In the previous 2025-26 tourism season, Kaziranga achieved its highest-ever count of foreign tourists, with 30,474 international visitors recorded by March 31, 2026, a significant increase from 17,693 in the 2024-25 season.
