Kaziranga National Park Bans Traditional Fishing Amid Court Directive
Kaziranga National Park Implements Fishing Ban
Guwahati, Jan 7: The practice of traditional community fishing during Bhogali (Magh) Bihu has been halted in the wetlands of Kaziranga National Park following a ruling from the Gauhati High Court on Wednesday.
In response to the court's directive, officials from the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) organized a meeting with representatives from the Golaghat district administration, Kaliabar’s Mohkuma administration, and local community members to inform them about the ban, promote awareness, and discuss its enforcement.
Authorities clarified that the prohibition is strictly enforced within the boundaries of the National Park and its wetlands, which are vital breeding habitats for fish species throughout the state.
Dr. Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of KNPTR, stated, “As this is a directive from the Hon’ble High Court, traditional fishing will not be permitted within Kaziranga National Park or its wetlands.”
She added, “We have been tasked with raising awareness among the public. In the next few days, we will communicate wildlife protection measures. These wetlands serve as breeding grounds for fish across the state, making their protection crucial.”
Additionally, the Fishery Department of Assam has issued immediate instructions to all district commissioners to establish fish pricing in their areas ahead of Magh Bihu and ensure adherence to these regulations.
Order issued by Fishery Department, Government of Assam
As per an official order released on January 6, district administrations have been directed to form monitoring teams in markets to ensure that fish vendors are adhering to the approved pricing and following the guidelines.
This directive was issued following the instructions from the Minister of Fishery, with district fishery development officers instructed to work closely with district administrations to enforce price regulations during the festive period.
