Kashmir's Article 370 Debate Intensifies Ahead of August 5 Protests

Rising Tensions Over Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir

As the date of August 5 approaches, the discussion surrounding Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir is gaining momentum once again. It was on this date in 2019 that the Modi administration revoked Article 370, which granted special status to the region, and bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories: Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh. Political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have consistently called for the restoration of Article 370. However, the ruling National Conference has shifted its focus towards demanding the return of full statehood.

On the first day of the Parliament's monsoon session, leaders from the National Conference staged a protest in Delhi advocating for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's full statehood. The People's Democratic Party (PDP) chose to distance itself from this demonstration, prompting sharp criticism from former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

In a recent announcement, PDP President Mehbooba Mufti declared that her party would organize peaceful protests across district headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, demanding the restoration of Article 370 and a resolution to the Kashmir issue.

PDP's 27th Foundation Day Announcement

Mehbooba Mufti made this announcement during a press conference held at the PDP headquarters, coinciding with the party's 27th foundation day. She stated, "All of us present here will peacefully protest in our respective districts on August 5 for the restoration of Article 370 and 35A, as well as for a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir issue."

Additionally, Mufti expressed regret for her earlier comments made at Jantar Mantar, stating, "If my remarks regarding the violence against protesters in Kashmir have hurt anyone, I apologize."

It is noteworthy that on July 23, the PDP leader visited Jantar Mantar to support a protest led by the 'Cockroach Public Party' against alleged irregularities in examinations. While opposing police actions against student protesters in Delhi, Mehbooba Mufti emphasized that the situation in Kashmir is different due to security forces combating militancy.
