Kashmir and Odisha Celebrate Unity and Fitness with Major Marathons
Kashmir's 'Run for Unity' Marathon
The Jammu and Kashmir Police hosted the 'Run for Unity' Kashmir Marathon-2026, which aimed to foster unity, fitness, and community spirit. The event attracted schoolchildren, women, girls, differently-abled individuals, and sports enthusiasts, showcasing a diverse participation. The marathon was officially launched by ADG J&K Police, Nitish Kumar (IPS), who noted the enthusiastic involvement from various community members.
'Run for Unity' Surpasses Expectations
In a statement to the media, Nitish Kumar expressed his delight at the turnout, which surpassed expectations, especially since the marathon took place on a weekday. He mentioned that many participants traveled from outside Jammu and Kashmir to join the event. Kumar remarked, "The turnout for the 'Run for Unity' marathon today was beyond our expectations, particularly given that it was a working day. Numerous runners and sports enthusiasts came from outside the region to participate."
Encouraging Community Participation
The ADG emphasized the significance of diverse participation, stating, "It is heartening to see individuals from all walks of life—young children, women, girls, and differently-abled persons—taking part in this event."
Using Sports to Combat Substance Abuse
Kumar also highlighted the importance of sports in engaging youth and steering them away from substance abuse. He stated, "Sports serve as a powerful means to guide our children and youth away from drug addiction. The enthusiastic involvement of our youth clearly indicates their success in combating the drug issue in Kashmir." The marathon aimed to promote fitness, unity, and community engagement while encouraging young people to adopt healthy lifestyles.
Odisha's Statewide Promo Run
On a related note, Odisha celebrated World Tourism Day with a significant fitness initiative as thousands participated in a synchronized statewide Promo Run organized by the Department of Tourism. This event aimed to promote the upcoming OMC Puri Coastal Marathon 2026.
The initiative took place simultaneously across 32 locations, uniting over 10,000 runners and creating a remarkable statewide running movement under the theme of a healthier and more active Odisha.
This marked the first instance of such a large-scale running event occurring simultaneously across multiple locations in the state, coinciding with World Tourism Day celebrations.
With the successful execution of the statewide Promo Run, Odisha is gearing up for the OMC Puri Coastal Marathon 2026, set to take place in Puri this December.
