Karti Chidambaram's Optimism for Upcoming Elections

On Monday, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram expressed his belief that the DMK-led coalition will achieve a remarkable victory in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections scheduled for April 23. Speaking in Pudukkottai, he praised Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's strong public image, citing it as a significant factor contributing to their hopeful outlook for success. Chidambaram stated, "We are a large coalition. We have a natural advantage. The Chief Minister's reputation is excellent, which fuels our expectations for a great win... We are optimistic that the DMK-led Congress alliance will triumph in the elections."

Concerns Over Seat Distribution and Women's Reservation

Addressing the opposition to the delimitation bill, he clarified that while the coalition supports women's reservation, they are concerned about the distribution of seats, leading to their opposition. He noted that the Women's Reservation Bill was passed in 2023 and is now part of the Constitution, reserving one-third of the seats for women. "We are ready for women's reservation, provided it stays within the limit of 543 seats. We voted against the delimitation... If that bill had passed, Tamil Nadu's seats would have increased from 39 to 51, while Uttar Pradesh's would have risen from 80 to 143... If that happened, you would only need to win a few seats in North India to dominate India. We stopped that."

Rahul Gandhi's Critique of AIADMK and BJP

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and a Congress MP, accused the BJP of undermining Tamil Nadu's identity by using its ally AIADMK. He claimed that AIADMK has fallen under BJP's influence and is no longer safeguarding the state's identity. "In this election, they are attempting to infiltrate Tamil Nadu... AIADMK once had great leaders who defended the concept of Tamil Nadu, but today's leaders are not like them. They have now come under BJP's control," he remarked.

Defending Tamil Culture and Identity

He further stated that the BJP cannot directly harm you, so they attack your identity, history, and language through their ally AIADMK. "We are protecting Tamil culture, history, language, and traditions. Voting in Tamil Nadu will occur in a single phase, with results announced on May 4. The main contest is expected to be between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (which includes the Indian National Congress, DMDK, and VCK) and the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (in coalition with BJP and PMK)."
