Rahul Gandhi Praises Karnataka's Ordinance for Gig Workers

On Thursday, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi expressed that the ordinance issued for gig workers in Karnataka, governed by his party, marks a significant milestone aimed at ending injustice and ensuring social security.

The Karnataka government introduced this ordinance on Tuesday to provide social security for platform-based gig workers. It proposes the establishment of a welfare board and the creation of a dedicated welfare fund for these workers.

Gig workers are defined as those engaged in temporary employment. Rahul Gandhi shared on the social media platform 'X', stating, 'We need rights, not ratings; we are humans, not slaves.' These words resonated with him during his interactions with gig workers during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

He emphasized that the Congress government in Karnataka has taken a groundbreaking step by introducing an ordinance that grants rights, security, and respect to gig workers.

According to the Congress leader, these workers tirelessly deliver food, essential goods, and services regardless of the weather. However, they often face unjust dismissals, lack sick leave, and their earnings are determined by opaque algorithms.

Rahul Gandhi asserted that this new law will eliminate injustice, provide social security, ensure fair contracts, enhance transparency in wage determination, and put an end to arbitrary app blocking.

He stressed that technological advancement should go hand in hand with justice. The former Congress president noted, 'Rajasthan has taken the lead. Karnataka has set the path. Now it's Telangana's turn.' He highlighted that gig and platform-based jobs are creating new opportunities and significant changes, with workers' rights at the forefront of this transformation.

He concluded by stating, 'This is our perspective, and we will carry it to every state and across the nation.'
