Inauguration of the Dasara Sports Meet

G Parameshwara, the Deputy Chief Minister and Sports Minister of Karnataka, emphasized that the Dasara Sports Meet serves as a significant platform for athletes to display their skills. He highlighted the government's focus on job reservations, increased prize money, and enhanced sports facilities to support athletes.


A Rich Sporting Heritage

During the inauguration of the state-level Dasara Sports Meet-CM Cup 2026 at the Chamundi Vihar Indoor Stadium in Mysuru, Parameshwara praised the historical significance of Mysuru Dasara, which has roots dating back to the Vijayanagara Empire. He noted that the sports meet has played a vital role in shaping Karnataka's sports culture, with events like wrestling and swordsmanship being part of the Navaratri celebrations.


This year, 26 sports disciplines are featured, attracting participants from various districts. Parameshwara expressed pride in his own journey as a sportsperson shaped by the Mysuru Dasara Sports Meet, which provided him opportunities to compete at various levels.


The Transformative Power of Sports

Parameshwara spoke about the life-changing impact of sports, acknowledging that both victories and defeats are integral to the journey. He encouraged athletes to learn from setbacks and develop resilience, emphasizing that participation fosters discipline, confidence, and the ability to tackle challenges.


Government's Support for Athletes

The Karnataka government is actively promoting the sports sector by creating job opportunities for athletes. Parameshwara noted that during Siddaramaiah's administration, significant strides were made in employment reservations for athletes, including a 3% reservation in police recruitment for accomplished sportspersons.


Recently, a new order was issued to provide a 2% reservation for sportspersons across all government departments, ensuring a secure future for those excelling in sports.


Increased Prize Money for Achievements

Recognizing the dedication of athletes, Parameshwara announced an increase in prize money for medalists: Gold medallists will now receive Rs 1 crore, Silver medallists Rs 75 lakh, and Bronze medallists Rs 50 lakh. He also mentioned plans to offer incentives for Commonwealth Games medallists, similar to those for Asian Games medallists.


Modernizing Sports Infrastructure

The government is committed to enhancing sports infrastructure to prepare athletes for international competitions. Synthetic tracks have been established in 14 districts, with plans to expand these facilities statewide. Parameshwara stressed the importance of providing high-quality training environments for athletes within Karnataka.


Encouragement for Participants

Parameshwara urged athletes from various regions, including Kalaburagi, Belagavi, and Bengaluru, to participate confidently and strive for excellence. He acknowledged that while not every participant may win a medal, the experience of competing is valuable in itself.


He encouraged athletes to seize this opportunity to showcase their talents and to remain determined, even in the face of defeat. Each participant in the 2026 Mysuru Dasara Sports Meet will hold a unique place in its history, and he wished them all success in their future endeavors.

On this occasion, Asian Games medallist Pranavi Urs and Commonwealth Games medallist Shilpa K.S. were honored for their accomplishments, highlighting the government's commitment to recognizing and supporting sporting talent.
