The political landscape in Karnataka is buzzing once again as Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is set to visit New Delhi on Monday. During this trip, he will engage in discussions with the top leadership of the Congress party. This high-level meeting is expected to pave the way for the long-awaited cabinet expansion in Karnataka. Accompanying Shivakumar will be former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Congress President B.K. Hariprasad, who are also traveling to the national capital. Congress MLC Kashappanavar Vijayanand Shivshankarappa believes that a final decision regarding the cabinet expansion will be made within the next two to three days. Meanwhile, MLA Ashok Patton has suggested that the swearing-in ceremony for new ministers could occur on Wednesday.
Previous Discussions and Challenges
Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah, and Hariprasad had previously visited the national capital last week, but discussions on cabinet expansion could not take place due to protests led by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence regarding the NEET paper leak issue. However, they have already initiated the first round of discussions with the Congress leadership concerning the cabinet expansion.
Background on Cabinet Formation
After Siddaramaiah's resignation on May 28, Shivakumar took the oath of office as Chief Minister on June 3, along with 13 other ministers. The maximum number of ministers, including the Chief Minister, can be 34 in Karnataka. Several ministers, including Shivshankarappa, have expressed their desire to be part of the cabinet.
Shivakumar's Strategy for Cabinet Balance
Shivakumar emphasized the importance of the cabinet expansion, as he aims to maintain a balance between his loyalists and those aligned with Siddaramaiah ahead of the 2028 assembly elections. Reports suggest that the Congress leadership is considering appointing multiple deputy chief ministers, although Shivakumar is reportedly opposed to this idea.
