Karnataka Minister Defends Against BJP's Resignation Demands Amidst Allegations

Minister Priyank Kharge Responds to BJP's Accusations

Karnataka's Electronics Minister Priyank Kharge criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, asserting that they lack substantial evidence to demand the resignation of Excise Minister R.B. Timmapur. Kharge defended Timmapur, claiming that the opposition is merely attempting to appease the public without presenting any proof. He challenged them to provide evidence against Timmapur, stating that he is willing to resign if they can produce even a single piece of evidence.

Kharge informed reporters that for over a week, the opposition has been raising this issue in the council and the assembly. However, they have yet to clarify when and how the alleged incident occurred. They continue to call for Timmapur's resignation, but Kharge emphasized that if they can present any evidence, he is prepared to step down. During the assembly session, he invited them to share their evidence freely, even suggesting they approach the Lokayukta with their claims. Instead, he accused them of merely creating a spectacle.

He questioned the BJP regarding the absence of evidence, asking, "Where is the proof they are talking about?" Kharge further stated that whenever Congress has raised issues, it has always been backed by solid evidence. He pointed out that no tangible proof has been shown regarding the alleged crime and the money involved. Just because an official claimed that bribes were necessary does not mean the minister should resign. He reminded them that such allegations were common during BJP's rule.

Kharge added that the matter has been handed over to investigative agencies. He recalled that during previous scandals, such as the arrest of an ADGP-ranked officer, no one from the BJP resigned. He urged the opposition to present their evidence, expressing readiness for discussion and debate. He reiterated that if any evidence is found, Timmapur would resign immediately.

The BJP staged a night-long protest inside the assembly complex, led by Karnataka's opposition leader R. Ashoka and other party legislators, demanding the resignation of Excise Minister R.B. Timmapur over allegations of widespread corruption in the excise department.
