Karnataka Home Minister Critiques BJP MP Over Infrastructure Demands
Political Tensions Rise in Karnataka
On Wednesday, Priyank Kharge, the Home Minister of Karnataka, launched a sharp critique against BJP MP Tejasvi Surya. Surya had called for the release of a 'white paper' regarding infrastructure development projects in Bengaluru. In response, Kharge suggested that Surya should instead request the central government for a white paper on issues such as the promise of 'good days', the government's commitments, and the value of the rupee against the dollar. This exchange highlights the ongoing political tug-of-war between the ruling Congress government and the opposition, particularly concerning development claims and economic performance in Bengaluru.
Kharge Defends Karnataka's Economic Performance
Speaking to reporters, Kharge pointed out that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman hails from Karnataka, implying that the central government should have a better understanding of economic policies and their impact on the state. He defended the state's performance, stating that Karnataka's economic growth rate currently exceeds the national average. 'Everyone is aware of Karnataka's economic status; they don't need to ask us. They should inquire with the Modi government instead,' he remarked, emphasizing that Karnataka is growing faster than the national average.
Demand for Transparency in Government Promises
Kharge further stated, 'First, let them show us a white paper on the promise of 'good days'. They should provide a white paper on the commitment of two crore jobs, incoming investments, and the declining foreign direct investment (FDI). What is the current status of the rupee against the dollar?' He asserted that the data related to the state government's work and development is transparent and accessible to the public.
Call for Accountability on Infrastructure Spending
'Before issuing a white paper on 'good days', 'developed India', 'Amrit Kaal', 'Skill India', 'Digital India', and 'Make in India', they should first address these issues. Our work is already transparent, so they should release white papers on all these topics first,' he added. This statement came after Surya's request on Tuesday for a detailed white paper from Karnataka's Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, outlining the expenditures on city roads over the past three years within 30 days.
Criticism of Infrastructure Claims
Kharge questioned the Congress government's claim of spending ₹5,500 crores on Bengaluru's roads, noting that potholes are common and the condition of the roads is deteriorating. He later referred to disruptions in the Bengaluru Metro in a post on X, stating that there is a significant gap between the city's working populace and the administration's failures. When asked about the RSS's response to his previous letter, Kharge expressed willingness to give the organization more time but also criticized them for their inability to find documents despite their long history.
