Leadership Decisions Rest with Congress High Command

On Thursday, Karnataka's Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated that the final decision regarding the Chief Minister position will be made by the Congress High Command. This announcement comes amidst ongoing speculation about potential leadership changes and internal disputes within the party.

While speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Parameshwara clarified that he has neither formed a faction nor instructed his supporters to demand his elevation to the Chief Minister role. He emphasized, "I do not have a 'team.' Some individuals, whether friends or well-wishers, may express their opinions. Even during my district visits, I hear such comments. This reflects their personal interests, but ultimately, the High Command will make the decision."

Political Struggles Within Karnataka Congress

These remarks from the Home Minister surfaced amid a reported power struggle within the Karnataka Congress, particularly as the government approaches the midpoint of its term, making the Chief Minister position a contentious topic. Key figures in this political upheaval include Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and Home Minister G. Parameshwara.

Earlier, Parameshwara extended New Year greetings for 2026 on behalf of himself and the state police department, expressing his hopes for a successful life for all, especially the youth. As Home Minister, he aims to ensure that Karnataka remains peaceful, maintains law and order, and serves as a model for other states.

Security Measures for New Year Celebrations

While reviewing security arrangements for New Year celebrations, particularly in Bengaluru, the Home Minister acknowledged the challenges involved but noted that the planning was effective. He mentioned, "We deployed nearly 20,000 police personnel. I personally monitored the situation from the command center and issued directives wherever large crowds were reported. I am pleased that the celebrations proceeded peacefully and that people welcomed the New Year safely."

Regarding administrative matters, Parameshwara announced that the state government has approved long-pending promotions within the police department, stating, "We have completed over 30 promotions, including those from SP to DIG and from DIG to IG ranks."
