Court Ruling on Criminal Cases Linked to Hubli Riots

The Karnataka High Court has rejected the state government's decision from October 2024, which aimed to withdraw 43 criminal cases related to the 2022 Hubli riots. These cases involve activists from various organizations, politicians, and other influential figures. The court's ruling is seen as a significant legal setback for the government, which had ordered the withdrawal of these cases on October 10. This decision was challenged through a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Girish Bhardwaj, who questioned the legality of the government's action.

The bench, led by Chief Justice N.V. Anjaria and Justice K.V. Aravind, accepted the PIL and expressed serious concerns regarding the government's actions.

Court Declares Withdrawal Order Illegal

In its ruling, the court declared the withdrawal order illegal and also annulled a subsequent government notification dated October 15, 2024. This decision prevents the Karnataka government from retracting these high-profile criminal cases. The opposition BJP had previously criticized the state's move to withdraw the Hubli riots cases, alleging that the Congress government was attempting to appease the Muslim community.

Opposition Criticism of Government's Actions

Opposition leader Arvind Bellad condemned the ruling, stating, “These are the individuals who attacked police stations and assaulted police officers. They attempted to set police alive. However, the Congress government is doing this to please the Muslim community and minority votes. This is in Congress's DNA.”
