Court Mandates Report on Stampede Outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium

The Karnataka High Court has instructed the state government to publicly disclose a status report regarding the stampede that occurred outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. This unfortunate incident resulted in the loss of 11 lives and left over 50 individuals injured.

The stampede took place during a celebration following the Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) victory in the IPL, marking their first win in 18 years. Previously, the state government had requested the court to keep the report confidential; however, the court firmly stated on July 14 that there was no legal basis for such confidentiality, deeming it merely a belief held by the government.

According to reports, the court has also directed the government to submit reports from other parties involved, including RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association, and the event partner DNA Entertainment Networks. The franchise is awaiting detailed findings from a CID investigation, along with a decision from a two-member bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal. Last month, top officials from RCB and members of DNA provided their testimonies, although the date for the final decision has not been made public.

On July 1, the two-member bench of the CAT made a significant remark regarding the crowd at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The tribunal stated that RCB was responsible for gathering an estimated three to five lakh people outside the stadium to participate in the victory parade announced on their social media channels immediately after winning their first IPL title on June 3.
