Court Orders Government Report on Stampede

On Tuesday, the Karnataka High Court instructed the state government to provide a sealed status report regarding the tragic stampede that occurred in Bengaluru, as reported by local news sources.

The incident, which took place on June 4 near Chinnaswamy Stadium, resulted in the deaths of eleven individuals and left over fifty injured. This chaos erupted as fans gathered to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory in the Indian Premier League.

Following the event, the court took immediate notice of the situation on June 5, prompting it to issue a notice to the state’s Congress government and request a detailed report.

During the hearing, Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice CM Joshi reviewed a suo motu petition along with three related applications. Karnataka's Advocate General KM Shashikiran Shetty informed the court that the government preferred to keep the investigation details confidential while the judicial inquiry is ongoing.

Shetty also mentioned that a judicial commission has been established to look into the matter, with a deadline of one month to present its findings. Additionally, several police officers have been suspended in connection with the incident.

The court is set to reconvene on Thursday to further discuss the case.

On June 5, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the suspension of Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and other officers, initiating a magisterial inquiry into the stampede.

Recently, Karnataka Police apprehended Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, along with three others from DNA Entertainment Networks, in relation to the stampede.

This action followed the Chief Minister's statement that representatives from the Karnataka State Cricket Association, DNA Entertainment Networks, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru would face arrest due to their involvement in the incident.

On Monday, both Royal Challengers Bengaluru and DNA Entertainment Networks filed petitions seeking to dismiss the criminal charges brought against them following the tragic event.
