In a decisive move, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has mandated the demolition of structures that hinder natural rainwater flow, contributing to flooding in Bengaluru. Following visits to affected areas, he emphasized the need for a permanent solution to ensure smooth water flow and prevent further inconvenience. While acknowledging the legal challenges posed by stay orders on some properties, Shivakumar reassured that the government aims to avoid unjust actions against property owners. Action Against Flood-Contributing Structures in Bengaluru
Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar announced on Thursday that he has instructed municipal officials in Bengaluru to demolish buildings that obstruct natural rainwater flow and contribute to flooding. Shivakumar, who oversees the Bengaluru development department, mentioned that both he and the Chief Minister have already visited areas affected by the recent rains. He emphasized that this location is a critical junction where the flooding issue originated and has since spread to other regions.
He pointed out that individuals responsible for obstructing the natural flow of water have obtained stay orders from the court, and even municipal officials are not assisting in alleviating the flooding in these areas.
Government's Commitment to Finding Solutions
Consequently, I have directed officials to remove problematic buildings under the Disaster Management Act. Shivakumar clarified that the government does not intend to harm anyone's property or act unjustly, but it is crucial to find a lasting solution to ensure that rainwater flows smoothly without causing inconvenience. He stated, 'We do not want to take away anyone's property and cause them distress. I am personally visiting the problematic sites to verify the situation. Everyone has agreed to allow work to continue, but finding a permanent solution is essential. We do not wish to demolish any buildings, but it is vital to ensure that rainwater flows without flooding. We cannot allow Bengaluru's reputation to suffer.'
Appeal for Cooperation from Landowners
The Deputy Chief Minister also urged landowners to cooperate, stating that if any mistakes occurred due to technical reasons, compensation would be provided. 'We seek a permanent resolution to this issue. Everyone is in agreement, and we will continue our work.'
