Karnataka Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar Comments on Political Power Dynamics

Shivakumar's Remarks on Political Tenure

Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated on Sunday that no individual or political party remains in power indefinitely. This remark was seen as a veiled jab at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah amidst ongoing leadership tensions between the two. Speaking at the Congress Foundation Day event held at the Bharat Jodo Bhavan in the KPCC office, Shivakumar emphasized that history shows even the mightiest eventually face decline. He noted, “Even emperors have faded into obscurity. Alexander the Great, who conquered the world, is no longer here. Saddam Hussein had to hide in a tunnel. The same fate awaits the BJP and others.”

Internal Party Dynamics and Leadership Speculations

Last week, Shivakumar visited Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's residence, where he remarked, "I do not just give speeches from the podium; I have been involved in every aspect of the party." These comments were also interpreted as a critique of Siddaramaiah. Following the completion of half of the government's five-year term on November 20, discussions within the ruling Congress party have intensified. Speculations regarding a leadership change are linked to the power-sharing agreement made between the two leaders when Congress came to power in 2023.

Siddaramaiah's Commitment to Full Term

Siddaramaiah has publicly stated his intention to serve his full term as Chief Minister of Karnataka. Reports suggest there might be an agreement to share the Chief Minister's term equally between him and Shivakumar. However, neither the party nor the leaders have confirmed this. Recently, Shivakumar hinted at a "secret agreement" without providing details. Despite this, he denied reports of discord, asserting that the current administration operates as a united team under the freedom granted by the Congress high command.

Clarifying Aspirations and Leadership Confusion

When directly asked if he aspires to be Chief Minister for the entire five-year term, Shivakumar stated that he primarily sees himself as a party worker rather than someone solely focused on power and position. Both leaders have urged the high command to clarify the ongoing confusion regarding a potential power shift, citing the detrimental effects of uncertainty about who will lead for the remainder of the term.
