Meeting Highlights on Height Restrictions

On Friday, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to address the height restrictions being enforced around Bengaluru's defence airports. Shivakumar expressed concerns that these regulations are hindering urban development in the city. During their discussion, he pointed out that the current interpretation of the rules has led to stringent height limitations in large areas, particularly around HAL and Yelahanka airports. He argued that these restrictions are negatively impacting the growth of key urban areas and obstructing long-term transportation and planning initiatives.

Concerns Over Urban Development

Shivakumar shared details of the meeting on social media, emphasizing the need for a constructive dialogue regarding the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for construction near Bengaluru's defence airports. He reiterated that the height restrictions, especially around HAL and Yelahanka, are affecting development across various parts of the city. He explained that the strict height limitations imposed due to the current interpretation of the regulations are disrupting growth in central urban areas and impacting long-term planning efforts.

Call for Balanced Solutions

He also stressed the importance of not unnecessarily hindering Bengaluru's expansion as a global technology hub. Shivakumar highlighted that as Bengaluru continues to grow as a major technology center, it is crucial to ensure that urban development is not impeded. He requested the Defence Minister's intervention to find a balanced solution that meets the city's development needs while ensuring aviation safety.

Previous Correspondence on the Issue

Prior to the meeting, the Deputy Chief Minister had raised this issue in a letter dated April 21. In his correspondence, Shivakumar noted that HAL Airport is located in the heart of Bengaluru, one of the fastest-growing cities globally, where there is a high demand for development. He underscored that additional restrictions are obstructing growth in surrounding areas. Therefore, he urged the Defence Minister to consider this matter and directed officials to address it while keeping aviation safety and the city's development needs in mind.
