Karnataka Deputy CM Cancels Davos Trip Amid Political Responsibilities

Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has canceled his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, originally set for January 18. The cancellation is due to his involvement in crucial political activities, including meetings regarding the Assam Assembly elections and a campaign against the central government. D.K. Shivakumar's Davos Visit Canceled

D.K. Shivakumar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, has called off his official trip to Davos to attend the World Economic Forum, which was scheduled for January 18. This information was disclosed in an official statement. The World Economic Forum (WEF) will hold its 56th annual meeting in Davos from January 19 to 23, 2026, where leaders from over 130 countries, totaling nearly 3,000, will gather to discuss geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainties, and rapid technological changes.

Focus of the Davos 2026 Meeting

The theme for Davos 2026 is "The Spirit of Dialogue," aiming to provide a fair platform for global leaders from government, business, and civil society to reconnect, rebuild trust, and collaboratively seek solutions to challenges that increasingly transcend borders. According to the statement, Shivakumar's trip was canceled due to his official commitments in New Delhi and Bengaluru.

Political Engagements in Karnataka

The statement further revealed that Shivakumar is engaged in multiple meetings with All India Congress Committee (AICC) officials regarding the Assam Assembly elections and is also leading a campaign against the central government concerning the MGNREGA scheme. This comes as the Karnataka Assembly is set to commence a special five-day session starting January 22. Meanwhile, Karnataka's Home Minister G. Parameshwara mentioned today that Shivakumar has traveled to Delhi on the AICC president's directive and has been assigned responsibilities related to the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

Clarification on Shivakumar's Delhi Visit

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Parameshwara clarified that Shivakumar's visit to Delhi is entirely organizational, aimed at discussing election-related matters. He stated, "He has gone to Delhi on the AICC president's instructions. He has been tasked with responsibilities for the Assam elections and is there for discussions related to that. I do not have information on any other matters."
