Karnataka CM Responds to BJP's Demands Amid Stadium Tragedy Protests
Political Tensions Rise Over Stadium Incident
On the day when BJP leaders and supporters protested near Chinnaswamy Stadium, demanding the resignation of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar due to a recent stampede, Siddaramaiah retaliated sharply. He accused the BJP of exploiting this tragedy for political gain. In a strong statement, he challenged BJP leaders to present a list of resignations from their party members during similar past incidents.
Siddaramaiah expressed his concerns regarding the unfortunate incident at Chinnaswamy Stadium, urging BJP leaders to disclose any resignations from their ranks in the wake of comparable events. He described the stampede as a tragic accident and emphasized that, as a responsible government, they have taken accountability. The government has suspended senior police officials, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, and transferred the head of the state intelligence department. Additionally, his political secretary has been relieved of his duties. A one-member commission led by retired Justice John Michael Cunha has also been established to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
Despite these decisive actions, BJP leaders continue their protests, indicating that their motives may be politically driven rather than genuinely concerned for the public. Siddaramaiah criticized the BJP for their history of politicizing tragedies, stating that they have a tendency to pounce on every incident of death, accident, or violence. He noted that even if an elephant were to die in their courtyard, they would still focus on minor issues in their neighbors' lives. The people of Karnataka have recognized this pattern of behavior. While expressing sympathy for the families affected by tragedies, Siddaramaiah asserted that they do not exploit such events for political advantage. However, he felt compelled to highlight past incidents during the BJP's rule to expose their hypocrisy in light of their attempts to incite public outrage.
Siddaramaiah reiterated that his government is accountable to the 70 million residents of Karnataka. Initial actions have been taken against those negligent in the stampede case, and a comprehensive and impartial investigation is underway under the retired judge's leadership. Strict actions will be taken against those found guilty based on the commission's report. He urged BJP leaders to abandon their theatrics and listen to their conscience.
