Karnataka's Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar issued a stern warning on Tuesday to Congress legislators who have threatened to resign after being excluded from the recent cabinet expansion. He emphasized that the party's interests outweigh individual ambitions, stating that any resignation would be accepted within minutes. While appealing for patience among the disgruntled legislators, Shivakumar assured them that opportunities would arise in due time and confirmed that appointments to government boards and corporations would occur soon.
Reflections on Political Journey
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar reflected on his political journey, recalling that he too could have resigned when he was not appointed as a minister during the tenures of former Chief Ministers Dharam Singh and Siddaramaiah. Instead, he and Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara chose to wait for their turn. He reminded the legislators of the careers of senior Congress leaders, noting that when Veerendra Patil was Chief Minister, figures like Bangarappa, Kharge, and Dharam Singh were also not appointed as ministers. He stressed the importance of patience in politics.
Cabinet Restructuring Ahead
Shivakumar reiterated that the party's welfare is paramount and warned that any resignation would be promptly accepted. He also announced that a restructuring of government boards and corporations would take place soon, noting that the current officials have exceeded their promised tenure of two and a half years. He indicated that they would be asked to resign before new appointments are made.
Response to Resignation Threats
He stated that he would first ask his workers to resign from their positions to allow for new appointments, and then he would engage with the legislators individually. This statement followed Shivakumar's cabinet expansion, which was the first significant reshuffle since he took office two months ago, incorporating 19 ministers. While this long-awaited cabinet expansion ended months of speculation, it also sparked discontent within the ruling Congress party, as many aspirants were left out. In a show of dissatisfaction, Yashavantraigouda Y. Patil, a legislator from the Indi assembly constituency, submitted his resignation to the assembly on Monday due to not being appointed as a minister.
