Karnataka's Call for Cooperative Federalism

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of Karnataka has reached out to Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, expressing strong support for initiating a national dialogue regarding center-state relations. In a post on X, Siddaramaiah emphasized that he has conveyed Karnataka's unwavering backing for this discussion. He stated that federalism is not merely a political demand but an integral part of the constitutional framework of India. He pointed out that the increasing centralization in financial and legislative matters over recent years has disrupted the delicate balance envisioned by the framers of the Constitution. States should be granted the authority and financial autonomy necessary to fulfill their assigned responsibilities.

Emphasizing the Importance of Federal Balance

Siddaramaiah further highlighted that India's strength lies in cooperative federalism, constitutional trust, and respect for diversity. He urged the central government to provide all states with an institutional platform, such as a revived Inter-State Council, to restore balance within the federal structure and facilitate discussions. Karnataka is prepared to contribute constructively to strengthening India's democratic and federal framework.

Political Activity Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections

This development comes amid heightened political activity in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Congress MP P. Chidambaram and K. Selva Perunthagai, the president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, are scheduled to meet with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday to resolve the seat-sharing formula between the ruling coalition of DMK and Congress. Selva Perunthagai dismissed speculation about disagreements, stating that pre-election discussions are a standard procedure. He noted that negotiations occur in every election, with each party seeking more seats, ultimately leading to a compromise. He reiterated that the DMK-Congress partnership under the India bloc remains an ideological alliance. Meanwhile, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on March 2 to discuss strategies for the upcoming elections. Elections for the 234 members of the Tamil Nadu Assembly are expected to take place in the first half of 2026, with alliances gearing up for a significant contest.
