Karbi Anglong's Land Rights and Job Security Issues Ahead of 2027 Elections
Growing Concerns Over Land Rights in Karbi Anglong
Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has granted authority to the Rong Asar.
DIPHU, July 13: In the hilly regions of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong, the topics of land rights and local governance are gaining significant attention. With political parties gearing up for the 2027 elections for members of the autonomous council (MAC), there is a noticeable rise in community activism centered on land ownership and job security.
To tackle land ownership disputes, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) is initiating eviction processes for individuals residing on community lands without authorization. This initiative aligns with directives from the Supreme Court, aimed at safeguarding tribal lands as outlined in India’s Constitution. However, several eviction orders have encountered legal hurdles, leading to temporary delays as officials reassess the boundaries of the disputed lands.
By December 2025, tensions escalated, culminating in a prolonged hunger strike in Phelangpi and minor confrontations. These incidents led to temporary internet blackouts and restrictions to maintain order in the region.
Transitioning from unrest to organized demonstrations, local civic organizations orchestrated a major sit-in protest in Diphu, urging the KAAC to implement eviction actions uniformly across all government lands and grazing areas, rather than selectively targeting individuals.
In a positive turn for the local economy, the government recently distributed permanent job letters to thousands of primary school teachers. This event marked the successful conclusion of a special recruitment initiative aimed at converting eligible temporary teachers into stable, full-time roles.
As the MAC elections in 2027 draw near, political analysts observe that the recent protests reflect an active electorate eager to hold their leaders accountable. Activists have indicated that their voting choices will hinge on the KAAC's effectiveness in managing and safeguarding the lands of indigenous communities.
Conversely, the swift issuance of job letters highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing service delivery and implementing meaningful reforms that bolster the local economy.
With the Gauhati High Court overseeing land record processes, there are expectations for intensified efforts in digitizing land maps and improving documentation in the upcoming months.
In the hills of Assam, governance is evolving to focus not only on maintaining order but also on ensuring land protection and access to education.
