Karachi Faces Severe Water Crisis Due to Pumping Station Failure

Karachi is currently experiencing a critical water crisis following a significant failure at the Dhabeji pumping station, which caused a major supply line to burst. This incident has raised alarms about the city's vulnerable infrastructure, with millions of gallons wasted and water supply interrupted in several areas. Officials are concerned about the impact of frequent power outages on the water supply system, urging for stable electricity to prevent further complications. Residents in densely populated areas may face severe water shortages for up to 48 hours, prompting authorities to advise water conservation and prepare for delays. Repair efforts are underway, with hopes for partial restoration soon.

Karachi's Water Supply Disrupted

Karachi is grappling with a significant water crisis following a major failure at the Dhabeji pumping station, which resulted in the rupture of a crucial supply line. This incident has raised concerns about the city's already fragile infrastructure. According to reports, millions of gallons of water were wasted, and water supply was interrupted in several key areas.

As reported, the disruption occurred late Sunday night due to an unexpected power outage, which caused multiple pumps at the K-III pump house and Phase-II system to shut down. This sudden halt led to fluctuations in pressure within the pipeline network, ultimately resulting in the burst of a 72-inch main line.

Before authorities could manage the situation, a significant amount of water flowed into surrounding areas. Emergency repair operations were promptly initiated, and technical teams are continuously working to restore the damaged infrastructure. However, officials have expressed serious concerns about the frequent power outages at the Dhabeji plant, labeling it a major threat to Karachi's already strained water supply system. They have urged K-Electric to ensure a stable power supply and warned that ongoing outages could exacerbate the crisis. Areas such as Korangi, Landhi, Malir, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and parts of Central District have been affected by this power cut, with residents facing severe water shortages for at least 24 to 48 hours. Authorities have advised citizens to conserve water and prepare for delays, while reports indicate a significant increase in demand for water tankers.

Sources from the water corporation have indicated that repair work could be completed within a day, but restoring normal supply may take additional time due to the need for gradual pressure stabilization. If no further issues arise, partial restoration could begin overnight, according to reports.
