Kapil Dev Praises Sanju Samson's Stellar Performance in T20 World Cup Semifinal

Kapil Dev Commends Samson's Exceptional Play

After India's thrilling victory over England in the T20 World Cup semifinal, former Indian captain and current president of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), Kapil Dev, expressed admiration for Sanju Samson's remarkable innings. He also addressed the struggles of out-of-form batter Abhishek Sharma during a media interaction at the PGTI's '72 The League' final.

Samson's Impressive Knock

In the semifinal match, Samson showcased his talent with a stunning 89 runs off just 42 balls, hitting eight fours and seven sixes. Conversely, Abhishek Sharma's performance was disappointing, scoring only nine runs in seven balls, marking his third dismissal to off spinners in the tournament. To date, he has accumulated only 89 runs in seven innings, with a fifty against Zimbabwe being his sole significant contribution.

Kapil's Thoughts on Players

Kapil remarked on Samson's performance, stating, "He is an exceptional cricketer and a significant player. Sometimes, players can lose their form, as seen with Abhishek during the World Cup. However, they are capable of bouncing back. Sanju has played outstanding cricket in the last two matches."

Samson's Journey to Success

Samson's recent performances, including a previous 97* against the West Indies, come after a challenging period where he was moved down the batting order in favor of vice-captain Shubman Gill during the Asia Cup. Following Gill's exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad, Samson returned as an opener. However, a disappointing series against New Zealand, where he scored only 46 runs in five innings, led to him losing his position as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter to Ishan Kishan, who excelled after leading Jharkhand to their first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy victory.

Record-Breaking Achievements

Samson matched Virat Kohli's record for the highest runs by an Indian in a T20 World Cup knockout match, with Kohli having scored 89* in 47 balls against the West Indies in the 2016 T20 World Cup semifinal at the same venue. This edition, Samson has hit 16 sixes, surpassing Rohit Sharma's previous record of 15 sixes in a single T20 World Cup. He has amassed 232 runs in four matches, averaging 77.33 with a strike rate of 201.73, including two fifties and a top score of 97* against the West Indies.

Kapil's Encouraging Message for the Final

As the Indian team prepares for the final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, Kapil urged both Abhishek and the team management to maintain faith. He emphasized the importance of self-belief, stating, "Believe in your team, and the management must trust their players. Each player should have confidence in their ability to perform. There is still one match left, and while individual performances matter, a united team effort is crucial for victory."
