Vision for Golf's Growth

Kapil Dev, the iconic former captain of the Indian cricket team and the current President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), shared his ambitious plans on Tuesday to enhance the presence of professional golf in India and create better financial prospects for players.

In an interview prior to the 72 The League Finals, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain emphasized that his presidency aims not only to raise competitive standards but also to make the sport more accessible and lucrative for athletes. He stated, "We should popularize this game and ensure that golfers earn significantly, even more than other sportspeople, as they dedicate the same amount of time to their sport. I wish all golfers the best; go out there and build a career from it."

Broadening Golf's Horizons

Kapil's remarks highlight a comprehensive strategy by the PGTI to elevate golf to a mainstream professional sport in India. Under his leadership, recent initiatives include the development of top-tier golf facilities and expanding tournament schedules beyond conventional locations. In late February, he met with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai to discuss plans for establishing international-standard golf courses in Nava Raipur, with the goal of hosting global golf events and enhancing sports tourism in the area.

Chhattisgarh: The Next Golf Hub

When asked about Chhattisgarh's potential as a burgeoning golf destination, Kapil remarked, "We aspire to replicate the cricketing journey, which once thrived only in cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru. Now, cricket has spread to smaller towns. Similarly, we want golf to reach smaller cities, not just Kolkata, Delhi, Chandigarh, or Bengaluru. Chhattisgarh is crucial as it is developing, and we aim to establish it as a golfing hotspot."

Encouraging a Broader Sports Perspective

Kapil Dev also spoke about the future of professional golf in India, advocating for increased attention and participation in sports beyond cricket. He urged athletes and sports fans to diversify their interests, stating, "We need more individuals to dedicate time to various sports. While cricket is important, it is equally vital to invest time in other sports."
