In Kanpur, the Food and Drug Administration has confiscated expired dates valued at 50 lakhs. These dates were intended to be sold in the markets of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi with a sticker indicating a 2026 expiry date.
Kanpur: During the month of Ramadan, there were plans to distribute 10,000 kilograms of expired dates in the markets of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The Food and Drug Administration seized dates worth approximately 50 lakhs, which had already expired in 2022. Fraudsters had affixed a sticker indicating a 2025-26 expiry date. The administration took action last Saturday by sealing the packages of dates, sending nine samples for laboratory testing. This operation has caused quite a stir.
Officials from the Food and Drug Administration reported that a raid was conducted at Rajneesh Traders in the Machharia area. Here, 10,000 kilograms of dates were packed and ready for sale. Once the sticker was removed, the truth was revealed. There were plans to reintroduce expired dates into the market with new stickers. The seized dates are valued at 50 lakhs, and further action will be taken after the test results are received.

Assistant Food Commissioner Sanjay Pratap Singh stated that the operation successfully seized expired dates worth 50 lakhs, with samples sent for testing. Additional raids will be conducted in other markets as well. The Muslim community has expressed relief over this action.
In various areas of Kanpur, including Bekanganj, Chaman Ganj, and New Road, many vendors were found selling dates with stickers indicating an expiry date of 2026. The Muslim community has welcomed the administration's efforts. Haji Salees, General Secretary of the All India Sunni Ulema Council, remarked that the food department has protected Muslims from consuming expired dates during Ramadan.
