Kamal Haasan's MNM to Support DMK in Tamil Nadu Elections 2026
Significant Political Shift in Tamil Nadu Ahead of 2026 Elections
A major development has emerged in Tamil Nadu's political landscape as the 2026 assembly elections approach. Kamal Haasan, the actor-turned-politician, has announced that his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), will not contest the upcoming elections. Despite disagreements over seat allocation and the election symbol (Rising Sun), Haasan has chosen to set aside personal interests and unconditionally support the DMK-led coalition. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin praised Haasan's decision as a "great sacrifice" for the welfare of Tamil Nadu. The coalition aims to ensure the return of the 'Dravidian Model 2.0' government in the state.
This announcement came after the DMK and its allies finalized the seat-sharing arrangement, outlining the distribution of constituencies among coalition partners.
MNM's Decision and Haasan's Statements
Kamal Haasan, the president of MNM, expressed dissatisfaction with the number of seats allocated to his party and the proposal to contest under the DMK's Rising Sun symbol. According to reports, Haasan stated, "Neither I nor the members of Makkal Needhi Maiam accept the suggested number of seats and the proposal to contest under the Rising Sun symbol in the current challenging political climate."
He further clarified that the party has taken a clear stance to remain out of the electoral fray.
Support for DMK Candidates
Haasan declared, "Therefore, we openly and clearly announce that Makkal Needhi Maiam will not contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections directly and will support the candidates of the DMK-led coalition unconditionally."
Expressing gratitude towards party workers, Haasan emphasized that this decision respects their sentiments and trust. He remarked, "Each of you is a living example of selfless politics. This decision symbolizes respect for your feelings and beliefs."
He also expressed confidence in the DMK's return to power, stating that he believes they will soon meet "Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and congratulate him at his swearing-in ceremony."
Reactions from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin
In response to this development, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin mentioned that Kamal Haasan personally met him at Anna Arivalayam and informed him that MNM would not contest the upcoming assembly elections but would support DMK candidates unconditionally. Stalin posted on social media, stating, "We spoke not just as leaders of two political movements but as good friends, sharing our thoughts. He said, 'This is not a sacrifice, but a duty' — yet, what he has done is indeed a sacrifice."
Stalin expressed deep emotions regarding Haasan's decision and sincerely thanked him and MNM members. He also expressed hope that Haasan would campaign across Tamil Nadu, adding that the forthcoming 'Dravidian Model 2.0' government would be formed with their support. Stalin concluded by stating that history would commend Haasan's generous decision, prioritizing Tamil Nadu's welfare over personal gain.
Seat Distribution Among DMK Allies
Meanwhile, the DMK coalition has finalized the seat-sharing formula. The Congress party will contest 28 seats, while Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) will contest 8 seats, and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) will contest 10 seats. The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) have been allocated five seats each.
Other allies include Vaiko's Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), which received four seats; the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), each receiving two seats; and Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK), which also received two seats.
