Controversy Surrounds Kamal Haasan's Remarks

Kamal Haasan is currently engaged in promoting his upcoming movie, Thug Life, alongside renowned director Mani Ratnam. However, he has stirred controversy with his statement suggesting that the Kannada language originated from Tamil. This remark has led to significant backlash on social media, with many users calling for a boycott of his film. Karnataka's Minister for Kannada and Culture, Shivaraj Tangadagi, has indicated that Thug Life could be banned in the state unless Haasan issues an apology for his comments.

As reported by a local media outlet, Tangadagi stated, "I have sent a letter regarding this matter. The film chamber of commerce has also made a commendable decision and held a press conference yesterday, stating that if he does not apologize within two days, the film will face a ban. I commend the film chamber of commerce for their stance."

When questioned about the potential ban on Thug Life in Karnataka, he confirmed, "yes."

Previously, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) had also called for an apology from Haasan, threatening to prohibit the film's release in the state. A representative mentioned, "Numerous Kannada organizations have requested a ban on his movie. We convened to discuss this issue and concluded that he should apologize. We believe his comments were inappropriate, and we are attempting to engage with him to resolve this matter."

Sa Ra Govindu, the former president of KFCC, added, "We have no sympathy for Kamal Haasan. If he fails to issue a public apology today or tomorrow, we will stand with Kannada activists and protest vigorously. We will not permit the film's release under any circumstances unless he publicly apologizes."

In a prior interview, Kamal Haasan attempted to clarify his comments regarding the Kannada language. He expressed, "What I said was intended with affection. Historians have educated me about language history... I meant no offense. Tamil Nadu is a unique place, and while I don’t claim it’s the only one, it’s rare to have leaders from diverse backgrounds, including a Menon, a Reddy, a Tamilian, and a Kannadiga, all serving as Chief Ministers from our state."

Thug Life features a talented cast, including Trisha, Silambarasan, Abhirami, Sanya Malhotra, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Rohit Saraf, and Vaiyapuri.
