Kamal Haasan Takes the Political Stage: A New Chapter in National Politics

Kamal Haasan's Political Journey Begins

New Delhi: Renowned actor and politician Kamal Haasan officially embarked on his national political journey on Friday by taking the oath as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha.

Reciting his oath in Tamil, Haasan emphasized his cultural heritage and civic duty, affirming, “As an Indian, I will fulfill my responsibilities.”

His entry into the Upper House signifies a pivotal moment in a political career that has transitioned from idealism to pragmatic strategies.

In February 2018, Haasan established the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), positioning it as a centrist alternative to the prevailing DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam).

His initial campaigns focused on promoting transparency, grassroots governance, and moving away from traditional political divides.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, MNM contested 37 seats, achieving a modest vote share, particularly in urban areas.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Haasan ran for the Coimbatore South seat but narrowly lost to BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan.

Despite this defeat, MNM managed to secure over 2.6 percent of the total votes statewide, according to electoral data.

After facing internal challenges and limited electoral success, Haasan adjusted his political approach.

In March 2024, MNM allied with the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance ahead of the general elections, opting for collaboration over ideological separation.

The DMK's sweeping victory in all 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu was partly attributed to MNM's support, leading to Haasan being offered a Rajya Sabha seat as part of the coalition's power-sharing agreement.

He chose the Upper House over a direct Lok Sabha run, citing the need for a broader platform to address public issues.

Haasan's nomination received backing from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and other prominent leaders, resulting in his unopposed election on June 12.

His arrival in Parliament is viewed as a strategic move, providing MNM with a presence in national discussions while laying the groundwork for future ambitions at the state level.

At MNM’s eighth anniversary celebration earlier this year, Haasan hinted at this shift, stating, “This year, our voice will resonate in Parliament. Next year, your voice will be heard in the State Assembly.” His political journey now enters a new chapter, merging his cinematic appeal with legislative duties.
