Kalita Manjhi's Historic Victory Reshapes West Bengal Politics

In one of the most significant personal victories in the West Bengal assembly elections, Kalita Manjhi, a domestic worker earning a monthly income of ₹2,500, has been elected as the MLA from the Ausgram constituency. Her triumph comes as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secures a sweeping mandate, taking control of the state. Manjhi garnered 107,692 votes, defeating Shyama Prasanna Lohar by a margin of 12,535 votes. A resident of the Guskara municipality, Manjhi previously worked as a domestic helper in four households. Her candidacy drew attention due to her grassroots engagement, and her victory stands as a rare example of socio-economic mobility through electoral politics. She had contested in the 2021 assembly elections but lost to Trinamool Congress's Abhedananda Thandar by 11,815 votes. The BJP's decision to re-nominate her reflects confidence in her local connections, which appear to have translated into electoral success this time.

Manjhi's success is part of a larger BJP victory, as the party won 206 seats in the 294-member assembly, surpassing the two-thirds majority and ending the Trinamool Congress's 15-year rule in the state. This victory signifies a structural shift in West Bengal's political landscape, with the BJP breaching its last major stronghold in Eastern Bengal. The national significance of this mandate is noteworthy, marking the first time since 1972 that the ruling party in West Bengal aligns with the party in power at the center. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the outcome, stating that "the lotus has bloomed in West Bengal," attributing this success to the party's organizational strength and voter outreach.

In a significant upset, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost the Bhabanipur seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, adding symbolic weight to the party's victory. Banerjee alleged irregularities in several constituencies and claimed that the Trinamool would "revive," although the results indicated a decline in support for the party in many areas.
