Appointment of Acting Chief Justice

New Delhi, June 19: On Friday, the Central Government announced the appointment of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, following the retirement of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul.

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification stating, "In accordance with Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President has appointed Shri Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, a Judge of the Calcutta High Court, to assume the responsibilities of Chief Justice due to the retirement of Shri Justice Sujoy Paul on 20.06.2026.”

Article 223 allows the President to designate a High Court judge to fulfill the Chief Justice's duties when the position is vacant or when the Chief Justice is unable to perform their responsibilities.

Justice Chakraborty, born on November 27, 1966, comes from a family of legal professionals. He began his career as an advocate on January 29, 1991, practicing at the Calcutta High Court for over twenty years, focusing on civil and constitutional issues related to service and education laws, with a specialization in constitutional law.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Calcutta High Court on October 30, 2013, and became a permanent judge on March 14, 2016. This notification arrives just a day before Chief Justice Paul retires upon reaching the age limit.
