Margherita, July 26: A local journalist reportedly leaped into the Burhidihing River from a newly built bridge in Margherita on Saturday, triggering a large-scale search effort by police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
As per reports, Ujjal Choudhury, who serves as the Margherita correspondent for a television channel, was riding a scooter with his colleague, Nitul Bharali, from Ledo to Margherita on Saturday afternoon.
Upon arriving at the Burhidihing bridge, Choudhury allegedly instructed Bharali to halt the scooter. Before anyone could react, he jumped into the rapidly flowing river.
“I was giving him a lift as he wanted to go to Margherita to meet someone. When we reached the bridge, he asked me to stop. The moment I did, he jumped. I didn’t even have time to park my scooter or grab him,” Bharali recounted.
Following the incident, Margherita Police quickly arrived at the scene and initiated a search operation with the help of the SDRF.
However, persistent rainfall has led to a significant rise in the river's water level, and the strong current is complicating the search efforts.
The reasons behind Choudhury's drastic action remain unknown, and authorities have commenced an investigation to uncover the details surrounding the event.
