Journalist Injured in Assam During Panchayat Election Coverage

Assault on Journalist in Dhemaji District

On July 5, a journalist named Madhurjya Saikia, who reports for an Assamese news channel, was reportedly attacked by a mob while covering the panchayat elections in Dhemaji district, Assam. The incident occurred in Dimow Pathar, where Saikia was confronted by a group of more than 25 individuals wielding sticks.

In his police complaint, Saikia has alleged that local outfit leaders orchestrated the assault. Authorities have since filed a case at the Silapathar police station and are currently investigating the matter. Saikia has suffered significant injuries and is receiving medical care at a hospital in Dibrugarh.

The Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), a well-known Mising students' organization, has denied any involvement in the attack. TMPK president Tilak Doley stated on Facebook that neither he nor any members of the organization participated in the incident, emphasizing their respect for the press.

In response to the attack, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma remarked that it is the responsibility of the police to apprehend those responsible. He expressed concern for journalists' safety and noted the apparent disunity within the media community.

Sarma also referenced a previous incident from June 29, where local TV journalist Bimaljyoti Nath and a colleague were attacked in Dhekiajuli while reporting on alleged illegal mining activities. He commented on the lack of solidarity among journalists, suggesting that they have become as divided as political parties.
