Support for TVK Strengthens Joseph Vijay's Position

Joseph Vijay is edging closer to becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as both the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) have officially pledged their unconditional support to his party, the Tamilga Vetttri Kazhagam (TVK). The two communist parties have communicated their backing to the Governor through a letter, indicating their commitment to TVK's governance aspirations.

TVK's Electoral Performance and Coalition Prospects

In the upcoming April 2026 assembly elections, TVK emerged as the largest party with 108 seats but fell short of the 118 required for a majority in the 234-member assembly. Vijay has won in two constituencies, meaning that after vacating one seat, the party will effectively field 107 legislators. Earlier this week, the Indian National Congress also extended its support through five of its legislators, bringing TVK's total to 116 seats with the backing of both leftist parties, each contributing two members. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which has two legislators, is also expected to lend its support, although official confirmation is still pending.

Anticipated Joint Press Conference

A joint press conference by CPI, CPI(M), and VCK is anticipated later today, where an official announcement regarding their coalition will be made. Should the VCK's two legislators join the alliance, the total would reach 118, achieving the necessary majority. Reports indicate that Vijay has presented his claim to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, citing support from 121 legislators in his letter, which also includes two from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and one from the Indian Union Muslim League. TVK leaders are optimistic that the Governor will invite Vijay to form the government and request him to prove his majority in the assembly promptly.

A New Era in Tamil Nadu Politics

This development marks a significant beginning for TVK, which is contesting its first assembly election. The party's rise has disrupted the traditional Dravidian two-party system in Tamil Nadu, compelling both the DMK (which holds 59 seats) and the AIADMK (with 47 seats) to strategize to mitigate potential losses amid coalition speculations.
