Jorhat Celebrates Tirobhav Tithi of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev

Jorhat, Sept 12: On Saturday, Jorhat commemorated the sacred Tirobhav Tithi of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev with various religious events held throughout the district to honor the Vaishnavite saint.
The day-long festivities were organized on Nilmoni Phukan Road by the local Jorhat Shak-Pasoli Traders’ Association.
The celebrations commenced with the raising of a religious flag, followed by lighting lamps and presenting floral tributes at the portraits of renowned cultural figures Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, affectionately known as Sudhakantha, and Zubeen Garg.
A grand procession featuring the Bhagavata and elephants paraded through the city.
This procession was followed by Naam Prasanga (prayers) and additional religious ceremonies.
“We are celebrating the Tirobhav Tithi of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. The initial event, the flag hoisting, has been completed, and the religious procession is currently taking place. Following this, we will engage in Naam-Kirtan this afternoon,” stated a member of the organizing committee.
The evening's events will feature a Dasha Avatar dance, Sattriya dance, and a Dihanam performance by the central Hari Naam group from Dhemaji, concluding with a Bhaona performed by children later at night.
Additionally, the historic Dhekiakhowa Bornaamghar and Moinapuriya Naamghar are also celebrating the Tirobhav Tithi with full-day programs, including Naam Prasanga and other religious activities.
Earlier in the day, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid his respects to Sankardev during the observance.
In a social media post, Sarma referred to Sankardev as one of Bharat's eminent Vaishnavite saints, whose spiritual insights have fortified the cultural and civilizational unity of the nation.
“Through his impactful teachings, art, and literature, Gurujona has enriched Assamese society while imparting the timeless values of Sanatan Dharma to future generations,” the Chief Minister remarked, paying tribute to the saint on this significant day.
The death anniversary, known as the Tirobhav Tithi of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, is commemorated annually across Assam to honor the esteemed Vaishnavite saint and recognize his lasting contributions to Assamese culture, literature, art, and the Ekasarana Naam Dharma tradition.
Sattras and Naamghars throughout the state celebrate this day with Naam Prasanga, devotional singing, religious processions, and cultural events.
