Historic Jonbeel Mela Set for January 2026

Morigaon, Dec 18: The renowned Jonbeel Mela, symbolizing unity and camaraderie between the hill and plain communities, is scheduled to take place from January 22 to 24, 2026, along the banks of Jonbeel Lake, adjacent to the Jagiroad-Morigaon road. The fair will be organized traditionally, as per the directives of the Gova Deoraja Royal Palace's 'darbar', emphasizing enduring peace and the barter system that characterizes the event.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Jursing Bordoloi, the secretary of the fair management committee, announced, "This cultural fair will see participation from over twenty villages, including attendees from Karbi Anglong, Meghalaya, and surrounding regions. On the inaugural day, participants from the hills and valleys will converge at the fair, bringing various food items to share.

The second day will feature a unique historic exchange ceremony, where farmers from both the hills and valleys will engage in this traditional practice. Following this, the Tiwa 'rajdarbah' will take place."

Prominent figures expected to attend the 'rajdarbah' include Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Piyush Hazarika, Morigaon MLA Ramakanta Dewri, and Jiban Chandra Konwar, the chief executive member of the Tiwa Autonomous Council, among others.
