The Origins of Terry's Hatred for Spurs

John Terry, a legendary figure at Chelsea, has opened up about his deep-seated dislike for Tottenham Hotspur, tracing it back to his teenage years at Stamford Bridge. In a recent episode of the Flashscore podcast featuring Petr Cech, Terry recounted a troubling experience from when he was just 14 years old.

While serving as a ball boy, he faced verbal abuse from Spurs fans, an incident that left a significant mark on him. Terry stated, "They were hurling insults and objects at me, and it was a shocking experience. That moment really stuck with me, and I developed a strong aversion to Spurs." He emphasized, "I genuinely despise them. It’s quite evident. When you dedicate so much time to a club, that rivalry becomes ingrained in you."

Terry's Impressive Record Against Tottenham

Terry takes pride in Chelsea's historical success against Tottenham during his tenure, noting that the Blues never suffered a defeat at home against their North London rivals. He remarked, "They share my disdain as much as I do for them, and that’s perfectly fine."

Throughout his career, Terry faced Tottenham 32 times, achieving 17 victories and only six losses. He netted three goals against them and received two red cards in Premier League matches.

Terry's Continued Jabs at Tottenham

Even after hanging up his boots, Terry has not shied away from fueling the rivalry. Last year, he took a jab at former Spurs player Jamie O'Hara, who claimed that Tottenham had a larger global presence than Chelsea.

In a humorous retort, Terry mocked Spurs' lack of trophies, quipping that a tour of their trophy cabinet would take less than a minute. "They scheduled my visit for 5:29, promising to show me around the trophy cabinet and have me seated by kick-off. That’s how far behind they are," he joked.

Currently, Chelsea is striving for a spot in the Champions League, while Tottenham is precariously positioned just above the relegation zone, battling to stay in the Premier League.
