Jofra Archer's Comeback in County Championship

Jofra Archer made a significant return to first-class cricket on Sunday, playing for Sussex in the County Championship. This marked his first appearance in a red-ball match in four years. The 30-year-old fast bowler is eager to rejoin the England Test squad after a series of injuries sidelined him for an extended period. Archer has participated in 13 Test matches, taking 42 wickets, but has not played since February 2021.

In recent years, Archer has faced challenges with elbow and back injuries. He was recently ruled out of the ODI series against the West Indies due to a thumb injury. However, England selector Luke Wright suggested that Archer could be considered for the second Test against India at Edgbaston, starting on July 2. England's captain, Ben Stokes, confirmed that Archer is keen to return to Test cricket.

During Day 1 of the County match against Durham, Archer made a notable contribution with the bat, scoring a quick 31 runs off 34 balls while batting at number 10. His innings included three fours and a six, and he formed a partnership of 57 runs with James Coles, who ended the day not out on 117. Sussex concluded the day at 322/9.

Interestingly, Archer was not initially included in Sussex's squad, but this was later clarified by selector Luke Wright as a simple administrative oversight.

As of Monday, Archer had bowled 14 overs and taken one wicket. His performance has generated interest, and initial impressions suggest a solid comeback.

Archer's return is timely for England, who struggled with their bowling in the first Test against India, conceding 471 runs. With Mark Wood recovering from knee surgery, the team is in need of an experienced pacer, and Archer's comeback could be just what they need.
