Root's Sentiments on McCullum's Departure

Joe Root, the captain of the England cricket team, shared his feelings regarding the exit of head coach Brendon McCullum from his role as England's Test coach. He commended McCullum for enhancing his performance and altering his viewpoint on the game. While McCullum will continue as the head coach for England's white-ball format, Stephen Fleming, a former teammate from New Zealand, has stepped in as the new Test coach.

Earlier this month, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced the new appointments, with Fleming taking over as head coach and Root assuming the role of Test captain. This change follows Ben Stokes' resignation from the Test captaincy and his retirement from international cricket after England's 2-1 series loss to New Zealand in June, which followed a 4-1 defeat in the Ashes series against Australia.

Root's Honest Reaction to McCullum's Exit

"I was genuinely upset when I learned that Brendon would no longer be the Test coach. He has significantly influenced my game, and I appreciate his unique perspective on cricket," Root expressed during a podcast with Sky Sports Cricket.

"I consider him an outstanding coach, and I'm grateful that we can still collaborate in white-ball cricket. I owe him a lot and have developed a close relationship with him. The white-ball teams are performing exceptionally well, and I wish him all the best in that capacity," he added.

Root's Praise for New Test Coach Fleming

Root also expressed admiration for Stephen Fleming, the new Test coach, noting his long-standing respect for him as both a player and a captain. He acknowledged Fleming's impressive coaching achievements and conveyed enthusiasm about their collaboration, despite Fleming's primary experience being in T20 formats.

"Fleming and I have interacted over the years while he coached various teams globally. I've always looked up to him as a player and captain. His coaching record is remarkable, particularly in T20 cricket, and I am eager to learn from him," Root concluded.
