JMM Plans Major Electoral Campaign in Assam for Upcoming Assembly Elections
JMM's Ambitious Electoral Strategy in Assam
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is gearing up for a significant electoral campaign in Assam, aiming to contest over 30 seats in the upcoming assembly elections. A senior party official revealed that after internal discussions, JMM has tentatively decided to run in 31 constituencies, although a final decision is still pending.
The party's objective is to attract the approximately 7 million tribal population residing in Assam's tea gardens. Many of these tribal individuals have ancestors who migrated from Jharkhand long ago. According to a JMM leader, extensive discussions led to the decision to contest 31 seats in the forthcoming elections in Assam, with a final confirmation expected soon. A leader, speaking on the condition of anonymity, noted that Assam's large tribal demographic presents a promising opportunity for the party's expansion, as many workers in the tea gardens have roots in Jharkhand's Chotanagpur region.
The JMM believes that the social and economic issues faced by these communities have not received adequate attention, and they are seeking stronger political representation. JMM General Secretary Vinod Pandey stated that Hemant Soren has emerged as a popular leader in the nationwide fight for tribal rights. He has gained the trust of the tribal community that migrated to Assam and is now representing the tribes working in the tea gardens. Local tribes in Assam also view him as a powerful figure capable of defending their interests and fighting against injustices.
Another party leader mentioned that since JMM's victory in the Jharkhand assembly elections in 2024, Soren has been visiting Assam to raise tribal issues in the northeastern state. He also indicated that the Chief Minister might visit Assam in the coming days. On the last day of the Jharkhand assembly's budget session, Soren claimed that marginalized communities across the country are looking towards Jharkhand to voice their concerns.
