JK Tyre Rally of Himalayas 2026 Kicks Off with Historic Zanskar Entry
Rally Launch and Overview
The 2026 edition of the JK Tyre Rally of Himalayas, recognized as one of India's toughest Cross Country Rally (CCR) events, commenced from Manali on Saturday. This year, the rally, organized by Himalayan Xtreme Motorsports and Adventure X Fusion Tribe, achieved a significant milestone by entering the Zanskar region for the first time, according to a press release.
Competitors and Route Details
Featuring 140 participants across Moto, Extreme, and TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) categories, the rally spans five days of intense competition through the challenging Himalayan landscape. Competitors will navigate through Kaza, Jispa, Padum, and Pensi La, concluding in Padum, Zanskar, on September 30.
Ceremonial Flag-Off
The official flag-off ceremony took place at 5:00 PM on September 26 at Dev Lok, located near Span Resort in Manali. MLA Bhuvneshwar Gaur attended as the Chief Guest, with VPS Jasrotia, Deputy General Manager of Jammu & Kashmir Bank, serving as the Guest of Honour, alongside officials from JK Tyre.
Rally Background and Competitor Diversity
Since its inception in 2021, the Rally of Himalayas has evolved into a rigorous platform for riders and drivers to challenge their endurance, navigation skills, and machinery against the demanding Himalayan terrain. The 2026 rally features a diverse lineup, including professional racers, private entrants, female competitors, and Army teams across three categories. The Moto category includes 80 riders, one of whom is female, while the Extreme category has 35 participants, featuring two female drivers and five Army teams. The TSD category consists of 24 competitors, including four women, focusing on precision, timing, and navigation.
Exploring the Zanskar Challenge
A standout aspect of this year's rally is its inaugural entry into Zanskar. Competitors will traverse high-altitude terrains starting from Kaza, moving towards Jispa, and into Zanskar, navigating through Padum and Pensi La before returning to Padum for the event's conclusion. This new route presents a mix of high-altitude challenges, remote landscapes, lengthy competitive segments, and variable Himalayan weather, making preparation, navigation, endurance, and reliability essential for success.

This edition holds special significance as it pays tribute to Hari Singh, known as the 'Gypsy King' and a five-time National Rally Champion, whose legacy continues to motivate aspiring competitors and rally enthusiasts.

The Department of Tourism, UT Ladakh, is collaborating as a sponsor for the 2026 Rally of the Himalayas to promote Zanskar as a premier adventure tourism destination in India. The rally serves as a unique platform to showcase the region's stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and exceptional driving routes to a national and international audience of motorsport fans, adventure enthusiasts, and travel influencers. Through this partnership, the Department aims to establish Zanskar as a top destination for experiential and adventure tourism, enhancing visitor interest, creating economic opportunities for local communities, and fostering sustainable tourism growth in the region.
