Imphal, July 17: The town of Jiribam in Manipur has been awarded the title of 'Most Promising Town' during the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024-25, which took place in New Delhi on Thursday.
Situated approximately 220 km west of Imphal, Jiribam excelled in the cleanest small city category for the Northeast region, showcasing its remarkable achievements in sanitation and cleanliness.
Among the 27 urban local bodies in Manipur, Jiribam emerged as a leading example of community-driven sanitation initiatives, ranking first among 21 small towns (with populations under 20,000) in the Northeast.
On a national scale, it secured an impressive 174th position out of 2,035 towns in the same category.
The award was presented to a delegation representing the state, including RK Dinesh, Principal Secretary of the Manipur Housing and Urban Development Department; Ng Uttam Singh, Director of MAHUD; S Shanti Devi, Chairperson of the Jiribam Municipal Council (JMC); and M Surjit, Executive Officer of JMC.
The event was attended by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, along with Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
Commenting on Jiribam's consistent performance in annual cleanliness assessments, Executive Officer M Surjit highlighted that the town is the first in Manipur to achieve both Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and recognition as a three-star Garbage Free City (GFC).
“The success we have achieved is due not only to the support of the community but also the tireless efforts of our sanitation workers,” he remarked.
After the award ceremony, the Manipur delegation engaged in a high-level brainstorming session with the Union Minister and other state representatives to evaluate and discuss the progress of centrally sponsored schemes under the Ministry.
