Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Intensifies Campaign in Assam Ahead of Elections
Political Ambitions of JMM in Assam
Dibrugarh, March 29: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is making significant strides in Assam, showcasing its aspirations beyond its traditional base in Jharkhand. The party has deployed its senior leaders to the state, transforming it into a pivotal arena for its electoral ambitions.
With key ministers actively engaging in the campaign, the JMM is poised to mount a serious challenge.
Leading this vigorous effort is Chamra Linda, a minister in the Jharkhand Cabinet, who has been appointed as the party's election coordinator for Assam. Over the past few weeks, he has immersed himself in the local political landscape, maintaining a vigorous campaign since February.
Alongside him is Deepak Birua, the Minister for Revenue, Registration & Land Reforms, as they work with a well-organized team of MLAs stationed in the city to ensure a robust electoral presence.
According to reports, the JMM has initiated a comprehensive engagement strategy, focusing on grassroots mobilization and empowering its cadre at the booth level.
The campaign commenced with strategic meetings at Karma Bhawan in Rajgarh under Tingkhong LAC, followed by another significant gathering in Hatiali under Chabua-Lahowal.
Today, the campaign's intensity escalated with critical discussions in Digboi, while Margherita, Duliajan, and Naharkatia are set for extensive mobilization efforts.
Linda emphasized, “This election is not merely about winning; it’s about advocating for the rights of marginalized communities. We aim to empower them and ensure their voices are heard.” He highlighted the party's commitment to strengthening its local presence and voter engagement.
He also noted that the training sessions are aimed at equipping first-time candidates with essential political skills and community outreach techniques.
Birua expressed optimism about the party's prospects, stating, “We are contesting 18 seats, and we anticipate winning at least five. The electorate has experienced both the BJP and Congress, and they are now seeking change, realizing they have been treated as mere vote banks.”
Adding to the campaign's momentum is Deben Urang, the general secretary of the All Adivasi Students’ Association (AASAA), Rejan Horo faction, whose involvement is seen as a strategic advantage to attract Adivasi voters, a crucial demographic in Upper Assam.
All attention is now on Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who is expected to visit Upper Assam tomorrow, further energizing the campaign.
Interestingly, while Soren leads the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance in Jharkhand, the party is pursuing an independent strategy in Assam, aiming for growth on its own terms.
This sets the stage for an intriguing political contest, especially with senior Congress figures from Jharkhand, such as Bandhu Tirkey and his daughter, likely to campaign for Congress candidates, targeting similar voter demographics.
