Political Developments in Assam
Guwahati, Mar 12: As the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, shows interest in entering Assam's political arena, Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), announced that they have initiated discussions with leaders from Jharkhand to enhance collaboration ahead of the upcoming elections.
Gogoi stated, “In light of the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, we (APCC) are here to engage in talks with the Jharkhand Congress to bolster our efforts. The Chief Minister of Jharkhand has visited Assam and observed the political landscape, and we aim to arrange a courtesy meeting with him.”
He mentioned that the Assam Congress has sought assistance from Jharkhand leaders and is looking to meet with Chief Minister Hemant Soren during his visit.
During a press interaction, Soren confirmed that he had discussions with Gogoi regarding strategies for the Assam elections.
“Our conversations were centered on developing strategies for the elections in Assam,” Soren remarked.
This meeting occurs amid rumors that Soren's party, JMM, is considering a foray into Assam politics as the Assembly elections approach.
Previously, Soren participated in a political gathering organized by the newly established Jai Bharat Party in Mijika, Biswanath district, on March 10, where local leaders and supporters convened to discuss potential political alliances in the state.
On the sidelines of the event, Soren noted that local leaders and party members had gathered for discussions, indicating that political talks were in progress.
At the gathering, Teharu Gour, central president of the Jai Bharat Party, announced plans to ally with the JMM for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
He expressed confidence that the proposed alliance aims to contest 40 of Assam's 126 Assembly seats and could become a formidable political entity in the state.
